Making a DifferenceThe principals of Smith Asbury have long been involved with the community, both locally and globally. Their shared values of the oneness of humanity, the importance of empowering individuals, and living in harmony with Mother Earth are reflected in the pro bono and community work they do. These values also shape the character of Smith Asbury -- in the clients we have, the projects we take on, and the tenor of our workplace. Here are some of the organizations and projects that Smith Asbury principals and staff are currently involved in, outside of our regular clientele work. Mothers' Club Family Learning CenterMothers’ Club is a grassroots organization in Northwest Pasadena founded over 40 years ago to help low income, isolated families succeed in school and life. It provides a free, two-generation learning program for mothers and their young children. The program has been recognized nationally by leading family literacy organizations for its successful outcomes. Mothers gain self-esteem and leave the program being powerful advocates for their children; children learn essential skills for school readiness. The organization will move into its first permanent home in 2007, having completed a successful capital campaign. Judy Smith Asbury has been on the Board of Directors for Mothers’ Club Family Learning Center for three years; she serves as President for FY 2007-08. Allstar Axess, LLCAllstar Axess combines star athletes, unique memorabilia and mobile communications to bring fans and their favorite athletes together in unique ways. The business is dedicated to return 10% or more of net proceeds to charitable causes that support youth at risk and former athletes who are homeless and disabled with no support. Greg Asbury founded Allstar Axess LLC with partners Aaron Taylor and Jon Harris in early 2007 and will launch products by fall 2007 with major college and professional athletic organizations. Sustain SumatraGreg Asbury, working with American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, created the Sustain Sumatra program following the devastating Tsunami. Sustain Sumatra promotes fair trade and sustainable trade to follow the massive aid efforts. Trade After Aid is the motto for this program. Sustainable trade will help farmers directly by providing direct access to markets for their goods. The program works to partner companies with farmer cooperatives. Missions MexicoMargrit met her husband on a missions trip to Mexico. So not only has she gained family there, but she's also found a greater understanding and love for the people and culture. And she enjoys opportunities to go on trips where she can help out in some way. In July 2007, Margrit went to San Luis Rio Colorado with a team of young people from her church. San Luis R.C. is a border city in Sonora, just south of Yuma, Arizona. With little resources, a local church there already has a few programs helping people in their community. Our team worked with them on a building project as well as a program for youth in their city. |
