meet GREG ASBURY
Greg Asbury, principal of Smith Asbury Inc., is known for his creative vision, seeing and making connections outside the usual standards of operation. He has launched and guided many successful entrepreneurial ventures over the past 30 years, using creativity and innovation to answer needs in an ever-changing marketplace.
In 1992, Greg founded Smith Asbury Inc, with his partner Judy Smith Asbury. The firm has won many awards for its creative marketing solutions and brand development.
In 1998, Greg teamed up with his long time friend Gary Bruner in creating a new manufacturing venture, Carolina Precision Manufacturing, LLC, in North Carolina. CPM is a now a market leader in computer controlled manufacturing. This very successful manufacturing firm provides just-in-time parts for a wide range of OEMs utilizing specialized precision Swiss turning centers.
Greg is well known in sports management circles from his work with the National Football League, the Rose Bowl and Stanford University. Responding to a need for medical emergency planning for sports fans, Greg created Medical Sports Inc. in 1986, which still serves the NFL for its Super Bowl games today.
As General Manager of the Rose Bowl (1988–1992), he was one of the business leaders directly responsible for the successful bids which brought the 1993 Super Bowl and the 1994 World Cup to Los Angeles. He devised a remarkable plan using innovative financing and construction methods for the restoration of the landmark stadium by adding state of the art luxury suites and press facilities.
From 1981–1988 he was an Associate Athletic Director at Stanford University. Greg was responsible for the fundraising, design, and development of many of the world class sports facilities at this campus. In 1983, SuperBowl XIX featured his unique ideas including the first ever Corporate Hospitality Village and the first ever Senior PGA golf event. In 1984, he contributed to the successful Los Angeles Olympics as Venue Manager for Soccer, hosting the largest soccer crowds in US history.
Greg’s formal education is in engineering and shortly after college, he became the Chief Engineer at San Jose State University. Although he was the youngest chief engineer in the prestigious California University system, he designed and built notable campus facilities and helped to shape the renaissance of downtown San Jose.
Greg’s career as an entrepreneur started while still in college. He and several other students founded Portland Student Services Inc. This was an entirely new and innovative vehicle to provide urban housing in a large metropolitan area. PSS grew to be the largest non-profit student housing corporation in the U.S. during his tenure as President and Chairman.
Active in business groups, Greg serves as the President of the American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, West Coast Chapter and on the Board of Governors for the Los Angeles Sports Council.
Greg is an avid photographer and artist, and frequently uses his creative talents to create original marketing collateral for clients. He attended University of Oregon Honors College and Portland State University from 1968–1973. He has recently completed training as a shaman in the Peruvian Quechua shamanic traditions.
Greg and his wife and partner Judy Smith Asbury live in Sierra Madre with their 13 year old son. The couple have three grown children as well.
